Panchakarma Therapies In Bisrakh (Greater Noida West)

What is Leech Therapy in Ayurveda

  • Name(s): Jalaukavacharana, Jalauka Avacharana, Raktamokshana (one of its forms)

  • Concept: It’s the use of medicinal leeches to remove “impure or vitiated blood” from specific areas of the body. It falls under the Panchakarma branch of Ayurvedic detoxification therapies. It is a type of Raktamokshana (letting out blood) where leeches are used instead of other bloodletting methods.

  • Historical Base: It’s described in classical Ayurvedic texts (e.g. Sushruta Samhita) and is considered one of the tools among Panchakarma for cleansing and balancing the doshas, especially when there’s accumulation of toxins (Ama), disturbance in Rakta (blood), and disorders related to Pitta and Rakta doshas.

  • Indications / What It Is Used For

Leech therapy is used in Ayurveda for a variety of conditions, especially those involving:

    • Skin disorders: eczema, psoriasis, acne, dermatitis etc.

    • Poor circulation / vascular issues: varicose veins, blood stasis, venous congestion etc.

    • Non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, abscesses or boils
