
What is Leech Therapy in Ayurveda
Name(s): Jalaukavacharana, Jalauka Avacharana, Raktamokshana (one of its forms)
Concept: It’s the use of medicinal leeches to remove “impure or vitiated blood” from specific areas of the body. It falls under the Panchakarma branch of Ayurvedic detoxification therapies. It is a type of Raktamokshana (letting out blood) where leeches are used instead of other bloodletting methods.
Historical Base: It’s described in classical Ayurvedic texts (e.g. Sushruta Samhita) and is considered one of the tools among Panchakarma for cleansing and balancing the doshas, especially when there’s accumulation of toxins (Ama), disturbance in Rakta (blood), and disorders related to Pitta and Rakta doshas.
